Could a Faraday cage be your new best friend?

A Faraday cage is a container that is designed to be impervious to the effects of an EMP. These containers can be purchased, or you can make your own. Tech Protect sells heavy-duty Mylar bags that serve as protection for electronics. Your Faraday cage could contain electronics such as a watch, a radio, batteries, or a solar battery charger and larger items like laptops, kitchen appliances, or even a generator.

Appliances, large and small, would become museum artifacts without a source of electricity, and if you rely on an electric can opener to open all those cans of food, you’ll be out of luck. Even clocks and battery chargers would no longer work. Solar power systems, both large and small, would also be impacted; each system contains computer chips that would now be fried by the EMP.

With little law enforcement, criminal gangs will likely band together and raid apartments, homes, and farms. The armories of police and sheriff departments, military installations, and the National Guard could be emptied, with thousands of weapons getting into the hands of malicious, dangerous people. Well-armed citizens will be the last best hope for most communities. See what I have to say about firearms and ammunition in Chapter 8.

Some might describe a post-EMP world as going back to the nineteenth century, but I think in some ways it would be far worse. We no longer have the tools, skills, knowledge, and, in some cases, raw materials to make the most basic tools for survival. How many blacksmiths do you know? Do you happen to own a pair of oxen and a wagon for transportation? You might know how to sew, but can you create cloth from raw cotton or sheep’s wool? The moment of an EMP burst freezes time. The food, medications, supplies, and tools in our homes may be the only ones we have for a long time. If you have 9 bottles of Advil, that’s all you may ever have. It’s a disquieting concept, isn’t it?

Where is your happy place?

I don’t know about you, but my perspective of life is affected by news stories, movies like The Book of Eli, and books like One Second After, and I need a happy place. These apocalyptic books and movies are all useful in reminding us of the reasons we are preparing, but they can also skew our view of life.

Even in good times, we all need a happy place, and mine is with my kids. Spending time with them always brings a smile to my face. When worries about the future or despair about the present overwhelm you, hit the “pause” button and spend some time in your own happy place. Those worries will be there when you return.
